Dukono, the predominant source of volcanic degassing in Indonesia, sustained by a depleted Indian-MORB

Co-auteur étranger; International audience; Located on Halmahera island, Dukono is among the least known volcanoes in Indonesia. A compilation of the rare available reports indicates that this remote and hardly accessible volcano has been regularly in eruption since 1933, and has undergone nearly continuous eruptive manifestation over the last decade. The first study of its gas emissions, presented in this work, highlights a huge magmatic volatile contribution into the atmosphere, with an estimated annual output of about 290 kt of SO2, 5000 kt of H2O, 88 kt of CO2, 5 kt of H2S and 7 kt of H2. Gas-water-rock reactions taking place within volcano-hosted hydrothermal systems scrub reactive, water-soluble species (sulfur, halogens) from the magmatic gas phase, and as such play a major control on the composition of surface gas manifestations. Combined ground and aerial measurements resolve vent-specific gas fluxes from a multi-vent volcano

Volcanoes with multiple summit vents present a methodological challenge for determining vent-specific gas emissions. Here, using a novel approach combining multiple ultraviolet cameras with synchronous aerial measurements, we calculate vent-specific gas compositions and fluxes for Stromboli volcano. Emissions from vent areas are spatially heterogeneous in composition and emission rate, with the central vent area dominating passive emissions, despite exhibiting the least explosive behaviour. Novel Autotrophic Organisms Contribute Significantly to the Internal Carbon Cycling Potential of a Boreal Lake

ABSTRACT Oxygen-stratified lakes are typical for the boreal zone and also a major source of greenhouse gas emissions in the region. Due to shallow light penetration, restricting the growth of phototrophic organisms, and large allochthonous organic carbon inputs from the catchment area, the lake metabolism is expected to be dominated by heterotrophic organisms. In this study, we test this assumption and show that the potential for autotrophic carbon fixation and internal carbon cycling is high throughout the water column. Quantifying biogeochemical heterogeneity in soil systems

Quantitative information about the resulting biogeochemical heterogeneity is needed to improve process knowledge and to render biogeochemical models more mechanistic. Here we demonstrate how standardized arrays of Pt-electrodes can be used to quantify biogeochemical or ‘functional’ soil heterogeneity, defined as the extent to which the soil is subdivided into microenvironments. A Graphical User Interface as a DSS Tool for GHG Emission Estimation from Water Resource Recovery Facilities

A Grafical User Interface (GUI) for the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from WWTPs based on four models aimed at quantifying the gas emissions from the aerated tanks (i.e. CAS and MBR reactor), aerobic digesters, secondary clarifiers and anaerobic digesters have been englobed in a GUI in order to provide a valid decision support system (DSS) to the practitioners. The GUI allows to estimate such emissions for the different WWTP phases considered. The GUI has been developed on MATLAB platform and provides as output the GHG emissions in terms of CO2 and N2O fluxes.
